Heritage and Stigma Project

In 2013 and 2014 Dr Rob Ellis and Dr Rob Light worked in partnership with Leeds Mencap and St Anne’s Community Services. Heritage and Stigma was funded by the AHRC and the Heritage Lottery Fund and it enabled staff, service users and student volunteers to co-produce public history outputs. We shared our expertise in historical research and learned a lot from the people we worked with.

Both projects resulted in exhibitions, ‘Nothing With Us, Without Us: The History of Learning Disabilities in Leeds’ – Leeds City Museum, Sept 2013 and ‘Our Minds, Our Histories’, The Tolson Museum, Huddersfield, June 2014.

Material from the project was used to script the ‘I Have Strings’ documentary drama and also provides the basis for our ‘Bag of Tricks’.
